Science published a study of AI-designed bacteriophage genomes first disclosed in 2025

Researchers at Stanford and the Arc Institute used Evo genome language models to generate genomes that produced 16 viable phages infecting E. coli. They used a known bacteriophage as a design template. A preprint first disclosed the result in September 2025; Science published the study in August 2026.

Why it matters

Generating functional whole viral genomes is a significant advance in biological design. The demonstrated result concerns bacteriophages targeting bacteria; it does not establish the ability to design viruses that infect people.
