AI labs are planning for the political fallout of an expected catastrophic AI event

Executives at Anthropic, OpenAI and other AI companies are privately gaming out how the public and politicians would react to a first catastrophic AI event, Axios reported. According to the report, the most likely such event is a cyberattack that cuts off financial services, internet access, power or water, and the planning includes red-teaming worst cases but focuses mainly on educating members of Congress. Many unnamed industry insiders told Axios they expect a major event within six to 12 months. OpenAI said it runs preparedness exercises on a range of scenarios and does not treat them as inevitable. Anthropic declined to comment.

Why it matters

AI industry insiders reportedly told Axios they expect an event with major real-world harm within a year, and the companies are preparing to shape the laws that would follow, such as a required kill switch on advanced AI and calls to slow the pace of AI like Amodei's. This is anonymous sourcing about private planning, not a change in how any lab builds or tests its models.
