Mark Zuckerberg rejected calls for a coordinated AI slowdown, saying each lab should slow itself when needed
Zuckerberg told NBC News that labs should pause their own work when they see problems, arguing commercial incentives already push them to build safely. He distanced Meta from the pacing effort led by Dario Amodei and backed by Sam Altman. In the Financial Times he said Meta has reached the frontier of AI, and that safety and alignment work belongs to a lab's normal duties rather than being a reason to pause.
Why it matters
Meta says it now builds frontier models, and its Muse agent had more than 6.6 million downloads and 1.8 million daily users by early October, so its refusal puts a major developer outside the pacing effort. Zuckerberg's alternative, each lab slowing itself when it sees problems, rests on commercial pressure rather than industrywide coordination.
