OpenAI used its own models to trace a hidden recording device in its offices to an employee, who was arrested
Prosecutors charged the engineer with trying to intercept conversations after a security sweep found the device behind a TV in an executive conference room. OpenAI says its models analyzed the device's storage, and that it found no sign the employee took model weights, source code or customer data. The complaint alleges the employee used a productivity tool to ask about meeting rooms, and that a chatbot account tied to the employee's spouse, sharing identifiers with the employee's own, was used to research how to build and hide a recorder.
Why it matters
Frontier labs hold model weights and plans that rivals and states want, and US officials now treat spying on them as a counterintelligence case. OpenAI presents the case as proof that its own models can help catch insider threats, a claim that rests on its account alone.
