American Express launched a framework that checks AI agent purchases against what the customer authorized
Amex's Intent Intelligence Framework has the customer sign off on an agent's purchase instructions and gives the agent a payment token tied to them. The instructions can set the merchant, a maximum budget and product preferences. Amex says it can stop a purchase that strays from them, for example an agent ordering Adidas shoes when the customer asked for Nike. The framework is part of Amex's ACE developer toolkit. Amex says agent purchases have not yet caused more disputes.
Why it matters
A check held by the card network sits outside the agent, so it can block a purchase that strays from what the customer approved even when the model misreads the request. That matters more because Amex expects agents to reorder routine goods without asking first. Amex hopes the framework becomes an industry standard, but it is still in talks with payment partners about adopting it.
