The White House AI task force adopted its charter and will design how AI labs report breaches to the government
At its first meeting, the task force led by intelligence chief Jay Clayton ordered a science advisers' report on cyber, bio and model-control risks. Adopting its charter started a 120-day term. Defense Undersecretary Emil Michael will develop ways for labs to warn the government of breaches, hacks and jailbreaks. FTC Chair Andrew Ferguson will head a law enforcement and consumer protection committee. No new rules were set, and how compliance would be enforced is unclear, though a White House official floated export controls.
Why it matters
A formal channel for labs to report breaches, hacks and jailbreaks would put incidents that labs now disclose voluntarily, or not at all, in front of officials who hold enforcement tools. The task force has not yet said what counts as an incident, how fast labs must report one or what happens if they do not.
