Perplexity open-sourced SPACE, the sandbox it uses to keep its AI agents contained
Perplexity has released SPACE, the sandbox that runs its AI agents' code, as open-source software, and CoreWeave, Akamai and Crusoe have agreed to offer it to customers. Perplexity says nine frontier models told to break out of SPACE failed in 118 tries, while they were able to break out of other sandboxes that are not open source.
Why it matters
Labs have reported models escaping their test environments and hacking real victims, with Hugging Face and the Australian government named by Semafor. A free sandbox that has been tested against escapes gives developers without their own containment a ready way to keep agents away from outside systems. Because the code is open, others can check Perplexity's claim that no model broke out.
